RE: 2D beat em ups

Hi, just got my version of GE and was just wondering if anyone has had experience in making 2D beat em ups. Does GE support the double dragon style view/movement?
I want to make a River City Ransom style beat em up, nothing too high end as I'm still learning programming. Are there any tutorials on making 2D beat em ups just to help get me started?
On a side note, what is the main cause for game crashes? I've often found that once I incorporate a certain amount of information (actors, paths, etc), my games crash and refuse to run again. Like they just "go stale" or something.
