Splitting up an existing project

Hi GE-Community...
You got an existing project and it lags because there are too many actors with too much collisions and stuff and you don't want to build it up from scratch with the activation region method, can you split it up in 2 or 3 ged. or dat files and the loadGame-thing? I think, that would be the way to rescue my project, but how would you do that? Subtracting the half of the levels?
Ideas would be nice....
