You can make a calculator easily, a few members on the forums went through a phase of making calculators (you can see them by searching the forums). People have also made clocks, which can easily be turned into an alarm clock. Making a calendar is pretty easy as well, and making a fully functioning pda is just an extension of the calendar. Not all of them are very convenient, because you need the program running at all times, and gE games require running through a window. But, it is still possible.

Would it need to be open at all times if it were on a ipod or android device?

Currently yes. gE doesn't handle backgrounding very well, so if it isn't in the foreground, it dies.
