GP2X next version Q

Hi Makslane, I just exported my latest game to GP2X and tried it; this game runs fine on a PPC but really crawls on the GP2X, so much so it's unplayable. I heard that GE is only making use of the one GP2X processor; will GE support both processors in the next version?

Future versions will support both processors, but I don't know when will be released.

Kodo what kind of game is it?

Hey Kodo,

What kind of game is it?
I made a puzzle game with about 160 tiled clones and the GP2X gets a horrible 4 fps. I thought it might be my programing so I took off every action except that which creates the clones, but it still made only 4 fps. So i pushed the number of clones back to 80, flattened the images transparent pixels and still only managed 8 fps.

Actually, I looked at doing a GP2X version of my last game, a platformer that I released last October on Clickgamer, Pocketgear and Handango but I didn’t get a good frame rate; that's a one level per screen game but did include a lot of clones. The game I’m working on now is a scrolling isometric based game, its still fairly basic at the moment but early tests provided a very, very poor framerate on GP2X :( I'm also developing it for PC and Pocket PC (on both its running like a dream), but I'd love to be able to export a playable GP2X version as well.

I think is the same problem I have with the HP 1910 (200 MHz, Pocket PC). There is no a processor problem, but a slow memory problem.

A solution is make a more optimized use of the cache memory to avoid to many access on the main device memory.

I'm working on this optimizations and I hope have better versions in the future.

That’s great news Makslane; it sounds like your cache access optimisations will benefit all platforms, which can only be a good thing :) Along with the 2nd processor support mentioned above I imagine that our GP2X games will fly. Great job :)

I just bought a Gp2x and I would love to port my old pc games (written in Euphoria) to run on it.

Has anybody had any success with retro-arcade type games on the gp2x?

I'm planning to build an arcade cabinet around the gp2x and it would be great to have my own games in it.

I'm currently finishing off a Galaxians clone and have no idea how it runs on a GP2X, I can link you to a demo if you'd like to see how it runs ?
