I've made an rainbow image file in each format except of LBM, because my image editor doesn't support it. The size in KB are quite different to each other:
JPEG 4,27 KB
GIF 1,44 KB
PNG 1,13 KB
BMP 4.49
PCX 7,43 KB
TGA 4,35 KB
XPM 11,20 KB
XCF 4.41
TIFF 5,21 KB

I like PNG most, too. I sometimes use GIFs (usually only for animations) or BMPs.

gif is only good for animations, but not for pictures

if your picture contains less then 256 colors, GIF is for you!
but if you have rather large pictures or BG, you might try to use jpeg
and if you need to have good quality, might be with transparency, might be big as well, you need to use PNG for sure!

I will do the same thing for an image large of 256x256.

*a while goes*

well, my program doesn't support them all either, but here is what I have:

Jpeg: 31KB (Not so good quality)
Bmp: 193KB
Gif: 16KB (bad quality of course)
Png: 54KB (The best choice for the best quality images with one of the smallest size!)
Tga: 192KB (About same size as bmp...)
Xpm: 624KB (O,,o)

NOTE:
All images were saved using this setting: 256x256x16bit (Except for GIF only supporting up to 256 colors)
Here is the original image:

png will handle images with less than 256 colors better than gif. I think it will still take an 8 bit layer of transparency as well.

Asmodeus, that picture really hurts my eyes!
I agree with the posts here that png is an excellent format for graphics.

Hi,
The graphics format I choose according to the quality, which I would like to have and the resulting file size.
From two criteria I then formed a compromise.
