Hey there, this is my first post here, maybe you already know it but the program I'm used to is Game Maker (http://www.GameMaker.nl). I'm now trying out Game Editor (I already tried AGS, 3D Game Maker, etc. which aren't that great) though I'm anyways not a real coder anymore but a spriter.

Just wanted to tell you about Game Maker, maybe some of you also find it interesting. Anyways, if you need a spriter for your game and your good enough to make a decent game then I'm in for it, just reply here or PM me.

So check out Game Maker, I already told some of my GM mates about GE. ;)

I think everybody here know Game Maker. They just decided to work in GE for some reason ;)

Not only do most of us know about GM, most of us have used it and do not like it.

^^ Well, I'm anyways a 80% spriter only so I'm fine with any game making tool.

I see a lot of similar topics here, like the typical "i dont Wanna p4y 15€z tats liek shitZ!".

Well, I'm gonna be browsing around here..

Hehe and those most who don't like it are mainly people that find GM complicated.. didn't think it was possible but GE looks even easier, stuff like "add actor" and so on. :P

I'm trialing both programs now, and while I am strictly speaking a pixel artist, I don't like the fact that every game that I make in Game Maker will be bloated and never run at optimal speed. Because of the behind-the-scenes overhead, the games can't be as content-rich as you would like.

Game Editor is optimized for lower end hardware, so there's no question about the speed. You just work from the ground up, adding features and more content as you like. Now if only it were as usable for level design... I'm a professional mobile games artist and use a pretty mature level design tool at work, so I am a little tempted to turn away from GE now, but keep reassuring myself that it will get better in time. ;)

All authoring tools have their upsides and their downsides. I like the way Game Maker organizes itself and how many options it has built into it.

Game Editor, from what I've seen, makes it a little more intuitive to modify instances of objects on screen. Also the layout makes it easier to see your entire project at once and get the big picture.

I've seen people in the Game Maker forum dissing Game Editor or any other popular authoring system... and I guess some of you here feel the same way about Game Maker or other competitors.

I guess it's not that surprising. Ask any web programmer about Perl vs PHP vs Cold Fusion and you will probably have to listen to some tirade about how they don't like a certain one for a certain reason blah blah blah...

It's all in what you prefer. I personally like to learn more than one system, because sometimes I feel that a certain programming language will be better suited to a certain task, because no one system is the best for all occasions.

Well put, and so often this common sense "right tool for the job" logic escapes most people.
