That is a great Idea i like it
but a few things
it is best to add a OS to it even if it is to load GE to ram it is better this way
and make it do more things other than play games
like Listen to Songs and play Movies
let the things on this system to be endless make it a Open System where more than one things can be done on it
Use SD cards cuz CDs are not to be made for mobile things
make it so that it can be more that one system can be able to play the same thing
am thinking a small Pan network or a simple IR network to allow Multiplayer

Buy a GP2X, problem's solved :)
Or you can buy a cheap old WM5 or WM6 phone, like Sony Aspen.
You can get it by $89 something :P

Did you know - The GP2X System is actually based on Linux? The GP2X Gaming system (A handheld gaming system), was actually built on a linux Kernel.

Tell ya what, if you can make this system work, I'll help make good games for it.

Yeah, me too. I'll even help create the OS. In fact, we could make the OS a Linux executable that uses loadgame() to load games from the sd card :P

Im going to make a short GED file of how I think the main OS should look. then we could try to recreate it using Virtualbox somehow.

This will take a while.

The only bad part about mine is that it uses the canvas for graphics which slows it down. But I'll figure out a way to speed it up :)

This is a rather interesting topic, You may like to see this as inspiration. I guess. Or something.

I have some concept ideas for a GE system, but once i get my scanner ;D

If you can come up with the Concept Ideas, I might be able to help make it into an actual linux. Using Enlightenment but it would take ages, since karate, GED classes, License, Car, and a Job is my main priority right now.
