I had the same problem running all kinds of games on the GP2x, if they use midi you need to get some third party software installed on your device, sorry I can't remember what its called rihgt now and dont have time to go find it. It's not really a GE problem though. It's worth searching the GP32X dev forums for info on midi playback, it was simple enough to do. It's also worth bearing in mind that the GP2x isnt a PSP where you just download and run it, users are often expected to put in some effort to get things working just as you might in any linux environment. Probably the best thing to do if you want to make it easy for everyone to download and play quickly is not to use midi on GP2X releases.

Sorry, the GP2X engine can't play MIDI files.
Try other format, like mod, xm...

I can't find the patch to fix the midi playback on the GP2X, wav files are much too big to have in game - are there any music file formats like midi or have the same quality as wav but are more compressed, that i can use on the GP2X?

It's called 'Timidity'. try searching the
http://www.gp32x.com/
boards for info, you might have to register there first though, but it is free.
I've used very small WAVs for my spot sound effects and all the music in my game is in MOD format. The risk with midi is that it can sound different on every machine depending on thier setup. MOD, IT and s3m can give great quality and keep the file size very small.
