A mini map like in super metroid?

Alright, I can program this if only I knew where to start :O I dont have the slightest clue on how I would do this, well actually I do but this method is VERY time consuming :/

Anyways, yeah does anyone know of a way I can make a map like Super Metroid?

I dont need you to program one, just give me the idea on how to make it, where to begin, I can do the rest :D

Just an idea but one actor for the map, and another for the character dot, then when the character moves add a "duplicate" action to move the dot during the same event but not as much as the character. if you are only moving based on room then try activation areas.
