Does anyone know of any really useful free programs that can be downloaded on the internet? I know some, but I am sure there are better ones that I don't know about. The ones I use regularly are:

Audacity - http://audacity.sourceforge.net
Graphics Gale Free Adition - http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Best ... sGale.html
MS Paint - not sure where to download this

Somone I know lost a few of the basic programs that come with your computer (he was probably playing around with some of his system files) like pant, notepad etc. I doubt that anyone reading this forum would have encountered the same problem, but it's possible. I have heard alot about gimp through these forums and it sounds very useful. Another image editor that I have heard of is
Prodject Dogwaffle : http://www.thebest3d.com/dogwaffle/free/ - the only problem with this is that it tries to save its files as .tga or .bmp, so you might need the bmp to jpg converter above.
A useful program to create installers for your exes is Install Creator : http://www.clickteam.com/English/install_creator.htm
Anvil Studio makes midi music files : http://www.anvilstudio.com/

If want to design realistic 3d images, but suck with a mouse, download at http://www.povray.org.

It works much like GE and C. Objects are placed in a 3d world with scripting.

here is an example sphere.

sphere {<0, 0, 0>, 1.0 pigment {rgb <0, 0, 1>}}

Just like nested functions!

Gimp is great and free and there is a terrific support group behind it.

I just bought a book to go with it on Amazon.com called Beginning Gimp. That book is $50 US if you walk into a bookstore but I got it for much less used on amazon.com. Gimp is not just good for making game graphics -- it's also good for working with digital photos.

You don't need that book to use it. There is terrific help and faqz and all that for free on the internet, but I also wanted to do some unique things with digital photos that I noticed in the book while I sat in barnes & noble reading it, and did not want to plough through a number of faqs to do it, so that's why I bought the book. You don't have to.
