Problem with bitmap fonts

Hi, guys.

Please, is there a step by step to create bitmap fonts? I just searched the forum and followed some steps, but all of my attempts failed. I'm doing this:

1. I downloaded some bitmap font from this page (http://www.dafont.com/bitmap.php?page=15)

2. I built the bitmap in Photoshop in this order: !"#$%&'()*+,-./0123456789:;<=>?@ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ[\]^_'

3. On GE, I selected this bitmap font and put the exclamation (!) as the first char, but did not work.

4. I read in some place that the first char is blank space and I need to replace it to underscore (_).

5. So, I put this way: _!"#$%&'()*+,-./0123456789:;<=>?@ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ[\]^_' and still not working.

Please, need help here. Best!

The first character should be <space> not an underscore

I suppose the characters ABCDEFG...ect have to be the same size as well as abcdefg... and 123456... but not the symbol characters so much?
I made a font with only numeric characters and it only worked when all the characters were the same size. I haven't made a full sized font yet, but by my observations, this must be true with the all the alpha-numeric characters?
I need some clarification on this. :|

I only made one font, but all of the characters used the same amount of space. So my 'i' and 'l' made it look like a lot of space in between them. My symbols had to be the same distance as well. To my knowledge, GE doesn't push skinnier letters and symbols together, so you might need to edit it a little bit.

Think about it, how would ge know which letter to shrink and which should be wider? it doesn't, for that fact GE needs the letters, symbol, anything to be spaced equally, much like an animation would be

i still wish there was a bitmap font maker that would be able
to create GE compatible font stripes, together with different things like
outlingin, shadows... gradients. and stuff like that. one-colour fonts do look so boring :)

Thanks, guys! These informations helped me a lot.

sonicfire, I agree with you, but I'm using a program called 'A Bitmap Font Creator' - and apllying the gradients and shadows on Photoshop. The result is very good.

The 'A Bitmap Font Creator' requires Java and works very nice: http://sourceforge.net/projects/bitmapfont

I'm using exactly this sequence: !"#$%&'()*+,-./0123456789:;<=>?@ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ[\]^_`abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz{|}~
