...Is 56 Mb too big?

I'm about to post a game I've been working on for a while; but I just noticed my data file is getting to be rather massive- It is above 50 Mb now!
That would take me about a month and a half to download (granted my internet is slow)
Just wondering if that is too much for most people to bother with or not

(it's full of 50 mb of awesome!)

Great :D More room for awesomeness
...but mostly wav music! (it chews through 10 mb per minute or something like that! :( )

If it's wav files pushing up your games size try using something like Wavepad to reduce the wav bit rate and to cut off dead space at the end, you'll be surprised how much you can trim down your sound files! You could also think about converting them to Ogg format to crunch them even further. You will get more people download if its smaller!

Also, if you ever wanted to port to a mobile device smaller is better!

correct, to crunch down e.g. large sound or musicfiles, convert them to ogg vorbis format :)

I have a converter to change wav to ogg and mp3 and so on, but the quality of the big space hogs- music- is too far reduced for my liking -maybe for sound effects though

after I exported the game and cleaned it up a little, the size is just under 35 Mb (still 35 Mb of awesome :D )

If your converter isn't making quality ogg conversions, perhaps you should try a different converter. Audacity is a great tool for that, and it's free.

You can also try Any Video Converter, it's very helpful as well :) For OGG that is. You can even set the bitrate at the right side :D

However I agree with DST, using Audacity would perhaps be best.
