I am wondering about the Config-->Game Properties-->Icon File Option:

1. Does GE use *.ico files? They don't show in my file list. Other image files show in the list, but not *ico files.

2. In game mode, the icon in the upper left shows a window icon and the title: "Game Editor". Does this look different in GE Pro Version compiled games?

i tried .ico too but doesn't work.
Try .png.

Yes. When you put an image, except .ico, you get a smart little personalized cutty game ... If you choose not to put an icon, you then get a square icon ie the exe default icon.
In Game mode, i don't know if icon works
